Niall and Cory were cared for by Sue in her home for years, and were just like her youngest kids during the day. She was truly a home away from home and a mom away from mom.
I spent a lot of time with Sue, too, visiting in
the afternoons at pickup time, and we became good friends. So many good times when I’d arrive after work, with the kids playing happily while Sue and I chatted, before I’d finally collect them and herd us all out the door to head for home and dinner. Niall began preschool just when Cory started going to Sue’s house, and four years later, Cory started fulltime preschool too.
So it was finally time to say goodbye, and it was such a wrenching moment, that very last day. Sue lived right around the corner, and as she said, “We’ll still see each other!” But it would be just once in a while, I knew. And we wouldn’t still have those long, relaxed times, just hanging out together.
