Tess is ten and all that comes with it.
Too cool for mom, squishes, and kisses.
Smart mouth and sassy attitude.
Can’t be bothered with the rest of us.
But every night, she intentionally throws her blankets on awkwardly, knowing that they won’t keep her warm and I won’t stand for it. One is draped lazily across her shoulders; another haphazardly wrapped around her toes just waiting for the perfect kick to dislodge. And every night, she smiles a small secret smile when I come in to strip away the blanket mess and tuck her in properly. I am awarded a private kiss and a sweet look of contentment as she sinks down into her pillows.

Every night since their forever. Sadie is too big for it now. Soon, so will Tess and then, eventually, Kate. I will cherish the little things while they last.
