The Scarlet South Festival:

In the month of February, the south of Israel is ablaze with spectacular displays of red anemones and other gorgeous wildflowers. The locals call this “Darom Adom”, also known as “The Scarlet South Festival”. My husband and I found out about this phenomenon from some friends we met in Ashkelon Marina, and we went with them to check it out.

It was an interesting coincidence that one of the families we met in Ashkelon was also from America and had also done the same Atlantic and Mediterranean crossing that we had. We really enjoyed meeting them. We did a few different day trips with them and some native Israeli friends; this was one of them.

The pictures you see here are us trekking through the fields at a kibbutz in Ashkelon, which we were told is one of the best places to experience the Darom Adom.
