March Story Challenge

Story Challenge -- Jobs.... I'm definitely not where I envisioned myself 30 years ago. Things have changed a lot over the years but I do believe I've always been right where I needed to be! ❤️

Journaling reads:
My dreams and professional goals sure have changed over the years. Sometimes I worry that the boys don’t think I’ve worked hard to support our family or see a strong, smart woman as a role model. They didn’t know me as a student, always striving to reach my goals and build my resume. They didn’t see me as a career woman when I worked as a Registered Dietitian in a busy, inner city hospital. There, I worked with critical patients and later in the outpatient clinic teaching classes. I always loved helping my patients. But once I became a mom, I wanted so badly to be home - to witness all of the boys’ firsts, to take them to music class and play groups, to raise them as best I could. And so I did. Being a stay-at-home mom was my most rewarding job. Then, when Evan and Carter were both in elementary school, I became a Kindergarten Parapro. The money wasn’t great, but I was able to work at their school, have the same schedule, and get health insurance so Eddie could start his own business. After a few years, I quit that job and helped Eddie part time while also pursuing some other work-from-home options. I’ve always kept up my Dietitian continuing ed and registration/licensure so I could go back into nutrition once the boys started driving. But then, my cancer diagnosis came and that was a whirlwind for several years. I still have lingering side effects and wasn’t sure if I’d ever feel comfortable working outside of the home again. But, in March of 2020, I went back to work full-time working with Eddie and his sister. If I’m being honest, it’s been a big adjustment. I joke that Eddie sold it to me as a “part-time gig where I can work from home most days.” And next thing you know, I’m in charge of the accounting department, responsible for over 30 bank accounts and 8 properties, payroll, office manager duties and I have two employees to manage! Ha! I love working with Eddie and I love that our office is close to home. It can be overwhelming and it is a lot of work. But I’m fortunate to have a sweet team working with me who are the same age as our kids. (I say I’m their work mom!) I’m grateful to be able to work and help contribute to our family’s finances. And… Ellie gets to come to work with me everyday! It’s crazy how life can change and sometimes we just have to pivot. But for now, I’m happy and adjusting to a full time job again!
