Such an unexpected treat last night! I've never seen the Northern Lights before, and never would have guessed that I'd see them like this in the Pacific Northwest. Wow.
It's fascinating, though, that all these colors appear in the photos but you can't capture what it looks like with your own eyes, which (for us) was more like sweeping white swirls, with just a hint of color at the horizon. It was awesome to see. Felt so lucky that I happened to be here this weekend, where we could easily drive into the woods where there was little light pollution.
My son was lucky, too, because his phone doesn't have a new enough sensor to capture the color. So he was glad I was there to show him on my phone and to take photos for us!

Journaling
What an incredible night! Niall saw a notice that there had been a severe solar storm that was going to create an aurora borealis across many parts of the U.S. - including Idaho - and suggested we drive out, away from the city lights, to see them. So we took a logging road into the woods, where it's usually very dark. But this night, there were milky white streaks across the sky, creating an overall glow. Then, I held my phone camera up to take a picture, and suddenly we could see greens and purples. Amazing!
