Journaling:
When I think about the impact the Coronavirus epidemic has had on our daily lives, much of it I see as
inconveniences.
What I miss are the almost daily walks to and from school with two of my grandkids. I was their person when their Mom and Dad went to work. The three of us would walk Rowan to school, and then Ryder and I would walk home and spend the day together until it was time to walk to school again to bring Rowan home.
They were important walks to me.
We talked about woodpeckers and would look for the new woodpecker holes in the trees (you could tell the old ones because they were black inside).
We would talk about keeping our B off the wet sidewalk so we wouldn’t have to wash it when we got home. That would be a long wait for Ryder as he watched it through the wash cycle and tried to be patient as it dried.
We talked about Second Breakfast and what I would make for him when we got back home (he was always hungry for pancakes).
We talked about what a shadow was the day he
discovered his and asked me to make it go away! I told him we all have shadows when it’s sunny. We would have to wait for a cloudy day.
He taught me the Halloween song he learned in pre-school and we would sing it almost every day in October on the way home.
We would pick out our favorite outdoor Christmas decorations and admire them...twice a day.
We talked about books and whether we would play with kinetic sand or Play Dough...after Second Breakfast.
Rowan would talk about her teachers and hope that when Ryder went to Kindergarten he would have her teacher, because she loved her so much.
I watched them grow and grow up.
The pandemic hit and their Dad worked from home and Rowan did distance learning and they worried about me getting the virus from my daughter, who is an oncology nurse and couldn’t work from home.
So I stopped watching them.
The pandemic goes on and on...
They are both in school now. They walk together.
I hope they still look at woodpecker holes and talk about the times they would search for them with their grandma . . .on those walks to and from school.
