I know I promised beach layouts after spending a week at the ocean, but this Layer Works called to me to capture a beautiful little hike we took one afternoon. The trail wanders around an island that is surrounded by a quiet estuary, and it's just lovely this time of year, with so much in bloom.

Journaling
After lunch at the Pelican Pub and Brewery, we drove up to nearby Whalen Island, just south of Cape Lookout. Sieglinde, Elizabeth, and I hiked all the way around the 2.5 mile loop trail with Bernie. The path goes gently up and down, with periodic fallen trees, wandering through light brush, blooming rhodies, huckleberries, and salal, and towering firs. Every now and then, you can peek out to see the Sandlake estuary, a very shallow waterway that surrounds it on three sides. Occasionally a side trail or outlook breaks out for a clearer look. Farther along, there was scotch broom and even a few wild roses. As we came out, Blue Herons soared right over us to their nests. Stunning!
