Such a fun (if chilly!) tradition! Cuttyhunk is a little island near Martha's Vineyard, and my (former) stepmother and her family had a long connection with the island (her mother grew up there, I think? I'm asking for details because I have more pages I want to create!) Somehow there is this tradition (or was!) of the folks who remain on the island jumping off the dock to salute those who are departing on the little ship that goes back to the mainland, the Alert. It's definitely an exciting and fun view as you chug out of the harbor, but I admit that I was glad I wasn't them lol!!
