My very first pets that were all mine were the three bunnies you can just barely see in their pen behind me. I don’t know how I came to have them, but I was so pleased! I fed and watered them, and admired them as they hopped around. We moved their pen every few days, around our spacious, field-like yard at the Freeway House. (You can see the freeway fence behind me too!) They weren’t tame enough to hold. I didn’t even know that some bunnies were tame and calm! We thought that they were all boys but - surprise! One day, Isildur, the white bunny... had babies! They were so so cute! I was delighted. Amazingly, it seemed that both Gandalf, the grey bunny, and the black-and-white bunny (name now lost to time) were the proud papas. I don’t know exactly how that happened, but by the coloring of the babies, it was very clear! In the top photo, I’m with one of my best friends, Valerie. I love our outfits! Very 1970s. My mom made my matching top and pants, and they were blue and green. My older sister had a set just like them, in pinks and purples. We had lots of animals at the Freeway House: chickens, goats, even a horse! But the bunnies were just for me. Then one day I came out to find that neighborhood dogs had attacked the pen and my little bunnies. A sad end, but never forgotten.
