Lauren and I had been looking forward to spending time in Thessaloniki. After the pandemic forced her to abruptly leave Greece and her semester abroad in March 2020, she and I were both excited to visit; her to see the city she’d fallen in love with and me to see the city for the first time through her eyes. We enjoyed exploring the city and celebrating her 23rd birthday at a traditional Greek taverna. We did run into a slight problem. On Sunday, our third day in town, I woke up feeling run down, which we attributed to the hectic pace we’d kept up for the past two weeks. Lauren has always told me that I need to slow down when I travel. She’s got a point. We explored slowly that day but because we still had another week of travel ahead of us and we didn’t want me to actually get sick, we eventually went back to the apartment so I could rest. She took good care of me and we both enjoyed the quiet time. Our flight to Chios on Monday didn’t leave until 6pm so we had most of Monday to explore some more. After we checked out of our apartment we were both carrying our two backpacks. We wanted to walk through the White Tower but I was still tired and didn’t want to wander so far lugging both of my heavy backpacks so I instead sent Lauren on with instructions to take lots of pictures and I grabbed a coffee and a seat in the lovely Aristotelous Square and enjoyed the beautiful weather and atmosphere and listened to wonderful music being played by a busker. When she got back she showed me her pictures and it was almost like I was there. Our time in Thessaloniki may have been a bit more leisurely than we planned, but we enjoyed our time here and I can see why Lauren loves this city so much!
