The lost village of Imber

Far far down the other end of the lane we now live on is this Village. It is closed to public except for about two days a year. A handful of buildings survive, one church and a two graveyards. I After the First World War the military bought the area and rented it back to the locals. Nobody thought much of it really. In the early 1940s they were given a handful of weeks to clear out, -homes, businesses, schools, as the village was required for American and UK forces to train in. They left thinking they would be back in six months or so. They have never returned. Its a very beautiful tiny place, fascinating and obviously a little bittersweet. Preserved in a way it would have been lost by now, but in such sad circumstances.

A bit of bittersweet history in a place so close to you! Fascinating! I often think of the sacrifices and hardships the British people suffered in WW II and what we are enduring now in the lockdowns is nothing in comparison. Just think to have to pack up and leave your home never to return or to have to shelter in crowded air raid shelters? TFS!
