After the song lyrics my journaling reads:
When I was growing up, our family always sang in the church choir. Every Christmas, we sang in the Christmas Cantata. And every year, my father sang the solo Oh Holy Night. It was most definitely his song. He sang from the heart, simply and with no ornamentation or embellishment. To this day, I prefer his singing to any other arrangement I have ever heard.
Now, my father slips deeper into the fogs of dementia. Slowly but inexorably, this disease creeps through his brain, softening the edges of the person he was, leaving him bewildered and lost in so many ways. But the music! Oh, the music remains. Recently, a guest at the community where he lives played Christmas Carols for the residents. When he started Oh Holy Night, my father stood and sang his solo from memory, all the verses and with the same quiet passion he always brought to the song.
We do not know what the future holds other than that there will be that thrill of hope for his weary soul and that soon he will have his new and glorious morn when he joins the Savior he has served with music all of his days.
