My grandmother shared many happy memories of her life at 309 East 11th in Austin, TX. Her great grandfather built the house in 1866. At the time this picture was taken in 1896, the house had passed down to my grandmother’s grandmother. The woman holding the child is my grandmother’s mother and the child is her oldest brother. Ten years later, my grandmother and her family moved to this house after her mother contracted tuberculosis and could no longer care for her children without help. Despite her mother’s illness, the house was often filled with love and laughter. This is the place my grandmother always thought of as “home.”
