Everything Has Changed - Memorial Day COVID change in plans

Well this was certainly NOT how we planned to spend Memorial Day Weekend. As usual, Scott, Lauren and I were heading up north for the long Memorial Day weekend. Grant had to work and was staying home. Lauren drove up from Ames this morning and the plan was to leave around 7pm. That meant the four of us could have dinner together. It always makes me happy when the four of us can share a meal together! NOTE: This was literally the only time Grant spent with Lauren before everything changed. While I cleaned up from dinner Lauren decided to drive to Costco to gas up her car so that that would be taken care of before she went home Monday. After she got gas we planned to head up north. While she was getting gas I received a strange text message from her saying: “So umm I just tested positive for Covid.” Huh?! What was she talking about? I was so confused. Apparently she had a slightly scratchy throat and had tested before coming home and it was negative so she thought nothing of it. While she was sitting in the long line to get gas she recalled having another COVID test in the car and figured, “I’m seeing Oma this weekend; it wouldn’t hurt to take the test again just to be safe.” The assumption was clearly that it would come back negative. This damn positive test was very problematic.

Obviously our plans changed. We were now all going to stay home for the weekend. Lauren was banished to the downstairs away from the rest of us. We would avoid exposure and all be fine. And we were all fine … until Monday when Grant tested positive. Grant’s text to the family on Monday after testing positive made me laugh. “I have managed to avoid Covid for 2 years by being careful. Now someone who lives in Iowa comes up and I only see her at dinner. Now I’m sick. ”

NOTE: Both Grant and Lauren felt pretty crappy for a while but neither got too terribly sick. Lauren took Paxlovid because of her Cough Asthma and it seemed to help her a lot. Grant did not take Paxlovid and let COVID run its course.

We all got through it. Lauren quarantined downstairs and then when Grant tested positive he too quarantined downstairs. Scott and I thankfully both managed to avoid getting COVID although, if you ask Lauren she would tell you I should have gotten sick. I would mask up (as would they) when I’d bring them their meals downstairs but apparently, according to Lauren, I would keep forgetting and would come down unmasked. She’s right. I did my best but to be honest, try as I might, it was hard for me to remember to stay away from my kids when I knew they’re in my house.

COVID was a glitch in our plans but we survived. Together.
