I'm on my 3rd puppy in 4 years and this experience totally threw me! It was fun to document it with Katie's new Vintage Artistry Hike products!
As soon as we brought Charlie home, I began taking him to the doggy potty spot in the natural area of the backyard. He immediately started eagerly sniffing everything in sight. He was so low to the ground that I didn’t realize he’d discovered some mushrooms under the leaves and was rapidly devouring them. I ran inside, looked them up online, and to my dismay, confirmed they were poisonous.
The after hours vet said we could monitor Charlie for symptoms overnight. But after several episodes of vomiting, we took him in the next day. They kept him a few hours and sent him home with activated charcoal. He did OK, but whenever we would go outside, he would find more dangerous mushrooms in no time. I was stressing out; how hard can it be to keep an 8-week old puppy safe? I would grab him in a panic whenever he stopped too long in one spot, and soon he was running the opposite direction whenever I came too close. We had torrential rainfall almost every day, and the first thing we did each morning was go to out and clear the yard of the numerous mushrooms that grew overnight. They would be lurking in the flowerbeds when Charlie and I went out at 2 AM for potty breaks, and I would shake off my sleepy fog, just in time to pull them up..
Finally the rains slowed and Charlie seemed to be less interested in mushrooms. I could finally relax, although I felt I had received a crash course in toxicology in the process. Now if I can get him to come when I call him!
