I'm lifting Candy (CNewby) this month, and since this is my last day off for a while, I thought I'd get started on the challenges by going ahead with this one! After quite a bit of browsing around and thinking about different options, I chose this page of hers to lift:

Originally, I was going to make a page about my sister and me, since it's her birthday, but as soon as I got started, the page took on a life of its own. I began journaling about my sister's work in her new job, and soon realized that's what I wanted to focus my layout on. She's had such an impact on this organization, and she's just begun! It was supposed to be a two year position, but she soon realized that it's likely to take much longer to do the work that needs to be done, so she will likely stay for at least several more years. We'll see!
Journaling
My sister turns 63 today, and I’m thinking about the year she just completed, as the new leader of a group of several hundred scientists at CIMMYT, an international maize and wheat improvement organization. It’s her dream job, and she’s been so thrilled to do this important work! It’s clear to me, and her agency, that she’s very good at it, too. She’s taken steps to better organize and stabilize her teams, helped secure an enormous new grant, hired key project managers to manage the funds, and improved morale. She moved to Mexico City for the position but has traveled all around Asia and Africa almost nonstop throughout the year. Her department is a combined organization where she has to constantly, but with finesse, of course, reassert that she is in charge now. So many personalities to work with, difficult personnel decisions to make within a new cultural framework, and challenges to sort through, including working in a foreign (to her) language much of the time. All of this in the midst of an attempted takeover by another agency! Oh, and also international crises that have particular impact on her work, like the Russian war with Ukraine (a major supplier of wheat), drought, African famine, etc. She’s really had her hands full, and it’s been go-go-go. But she built her confidence by steadily solving issues, and loves knowing that she’s really making a key difference at this time. I’m so happy that she has this opportunity, and can put her great skills and experience to work!
