Story Scrapbook Challenge : Back in my Day

Hi, it’s Carol (carollee) here hosting my last Story Scrapbook Challenge.  Yes you read right, after 10 years of getting you to tell stories on your pages, I’m having a break from hosting a challenge, and instead will be partaking in them,  I’m looking forward to it.  So let’s go out with a bang shall we.

Have you ever heard yourself saying “well back in my day …” ?  If so, I hope you join me this month because I want to hear a lot of that.

The world is changing so quickly, so why do we scrapbook?  To preserve memories.  That’s not just memories about our family and friends.  But memories of the way we lived, the way things were, what was once normal but now almost forgotten.  That’s gold to the reader.

Think back, do you remember what it was like to be at school, or do homework pre internet?  How did you communicate with you friends?  As a child how did you play?  What toys did you have compared to today?  What activities did you do?  What was your holiday time like?

What was the house like you lived in?  How were meals cooked?  How were meals taken, family all at the table?  Do you remember pre-TV?  Or pre-colour TV?  Is your old family home still there?

How has your job changed over the years?  Even if you’re not doing it any more, compare it to a similar job today.   How have work conditions or wages altered?  What did you get paid for your very first job?

How about towns and cities?  I know when I go back home, my home town seems so fast now, have you visited your home town lately?  What changes have you noticed?   What are the prices at the supermarket compared to back then?

Can you remember significant world events and where you were when they happened?  The moon landing, the day Diana passed away, and more.  What was your wedding like compared to weddings today?

Think of all the mod-cons we have today – streaming services, internet, wifi, music on demand, food services, electric cars, self-service checkouts, and compare it to what you used to use or had to do.  How on earth did we cope!!??  Are we progressing or regressing? That’s a story in itself.

So, let’s hear it, “well back in my day …”

The creative team have eagerly jumped on board with some terrific example pages:

Valerie (nana_vg) has created a wonderful page and I laughed so much at the term “primary remote”.  Gosh this is a great read and I’m thinking I might be from Australia but by golly we watched the same shows growing up.

Supplies Valerie has used:  Watching You Layered TemplatePalette Textures Paper Pack 22Ancestry Paper Pack 01.

Stacia is next and oh my goodness, I agree, to even try to explain what phone calls were like back then to a young person, it leaves them scratching their heads.  I love all the detail here it’s just wonderful.  You’ll be glad to have all of this story taken down for your albums Stacia.

Kathy (Blackkathy) has created an absolutely groooooovy page here about what life was like in the 60’s, the whole page and colours and that awesome font is perfection.   It was an innocent time.  And how cool she got to drive a love bug.

Carol (oldbag165) has combined “back in my day” with a superb Christmas page.  And oh how I loved reading it and the decorating of the tree from back in her day.  Oh and I also got the “walked barefoot to school” but we got “through the paddocks”.

And lastly Carol number 2 for today (carollee), my page is about growing up in the 70’s.  I was a 60’s baby but these photos are from the 70’s and how we made our own fun.  It was a simpler time, but we didn’t have to be constantly entertained, we worked it out for ourselves.   And how’s the background paper, I reckon mum had a dress in a fabric like that!
