Get Inspired: Vintage Artistry
Good morning everyone! Are you ready for June’s Get Inspired Challenge?
Way back when I was first trying to find my way around digital scrapbooking, I stumbled across Katie’s name on a product list attached to a layout featured in a scrapbooking magazine. Remember the days of scrapbook magazines?!? I found my way to Designer Digitals and I was immediately enamored by the vintage look of many of Katie’s products and while I love the cleaner look of some of her other kits, I still get a bit excited by anything “vintagy” that Katie releases. So . . . I just love the Vintage Artistry Bundles that were released earlier this year and I have returned again and again to them to complete a lot of pages this year.

But today, I’d like to focus on just one element. In the Sky ephemera pack, Katie has included a sweet little banner made from baker’s twine and wooden triangles. I’ve found myself using this particular element for a variety of reasons over the last week or so, and I thought I’d share my ideas with you. There’s one in the coral pack too, but I like the blue one because of it’s lovely curved shape.
I really like a lot of white space and I often leave a lot of it quite bare. I’m generally happy with that, but now and then, especially if my photo composition looks better sitting towards the bottom or the top of a page, it leaves an ‘uncomfortable’ amount of unadorned space! In this page about my great-niece Hadassah, I used duplicated and tilted copies of the banner to fill the top part of the page. This also gives me a place for my third of three buttons – helping to ‘hold up’ the banners.
Claire has been doing a lot of reading of late (stuck at home, you know!), and as an inveterate reader myself, this always gives me joy. My composition is a split horizontal one, and in this layout, the banner serves to connect the two parts of the composition.
In my last page, I’ve used two banners to create leading lines from the edge of the page, drawing the eye into the photo. I especially like the dangling tails here – which I had completely erased on my first page.
So – how might you use a banner? To fill in some horizontal space? To connect two parts of a composition? To create leading lines in your layout? I hope you will join me this month.
