Get Inspired Challenge: February 2023

Good morning everyone, Sharon here with an other book cover challenge for you.

One of my favourite reads last year was the Thursday Murder Club series by Richard Osman. Clever plots and lots of black humour – just my cup of tea!! And what’s not to love about the sleuths all being residents of a retirement village – SO good!

I’m going to show you the image from two different publishing runs because I think it’s interesting how vary a little.

You could take inspiration from:

  • the Red/Black/Primary colour schemes
  • the script/basic font combination on a slant for the title
  • the black icon with coloured highlight
  • the white background laid over a coloured border
  • title idea “The Thursday Murder Club” could have any day or activity substituted eg “The Wednesday Knitting Club”
  • title idea “The Bullet that Missed” could be a title for any close shave or near miss
  • title idea “The Man who Died Twice” – I’m not sure – maybe you have an idea?!

Please remember this is about taking any inspiration from the book cover – not necessarily about reproducing the cover – although that is ok too!

Creative Team member Chrissy (kikimama) took inspiration from the primary colour scheme, the tilted title and the border/edging. And circles are really a must on a bubble page aren’t they? I love the lined up buttons!

On her stunning page, Shannon (shannonroller) changed “The Thursday Murder Club” to the “The Sunday Walking Club” and used a combination of basic and script letters for her title! She also bordered her page using some beautiful new product coming to the store very soon. The whole thing is just gorgeous!

I made two layouts based on these book covers. My first takes inspiration from the red and black colour scheme, the basic/script title combination, the icon (I paper pieced the train using downloaded clipart as a base) and also from the border – although I stuck with just the bottom edge.

My second page attempts to reproduce the book cover – I went with the blue/black combo this time, used a map as my icon, bordered the page and created a title from two free fonts; ‘Better Together’ and ‘Longshot’.

Katie has put the following freebie together which you may like to use although it isn’t mandatory!
