Doing the Splits

CHALLENGE OF THE MONTH leaves us wide open to explore any type of design idea that comes to mind. Suggestions are always welcome! If you have an idea you’d like to submit, please leave a note at the bottom of this post.
Hello. I’m Brenda, and I’m hosting today’s Challenge of the Month. True confession: I like to mix it up with my backgrounds from time to time. Breaking up the background can be fun, interesting, and visually appealing. It’s especially effective when you have an otherwise simple scrapbook page that you’d like to add a little punch to.
So here is the challenge: Choose two backgrounds, and split them in any way you like. You can try this method on an existing page you’d like to experiment with or create an entirely new page with this background technique.
Katie has generously provided a freebie package to get you started.
Here are a few examples provided by some of our Creative Team members to give you ideas on how this can be done.
First up is a beautiful page from our guest team member, Penny. The first thing you notice is the ratio of green vs. pink. I really like just that bit of soft green, with the botanical patterned pinkish paper. Everything blends so well.

Products that Penny used for this page are: Layer Works 1933, Vintage Artistry Sage Paper Pack, ARToptions Rouge Paper Pack 02, Vintage Artistry Blush Paper Pack, along with the freebie pack mentioned above.
Next up is Team Member, Linda. What a nice way to display these quilt patterns. I love how the split background color scheme brings even more focus to her beautiful quilt photos. And the extra touches with various stitched elements are perfect for the quilt theme.

Products used for this project include: Dreamy Paper Pack 06, Stitched Geometrics 03, Clean Stitched Borders: Teal 01, Stamped Stitched Alphabet , Stitched Frame Clusters 03, Bold Stitched Alpha 01, and Drop Shadow Styles.
Team Member, Jana’s page is a spring delight, and she switched things up a bit by splitting her papers vertically. By doing that she was able to accentuate those beautiful floral elements with a pink background, while showing off her precious framed photo with the small patterned green background. Perfection!

Jana used these products for this project: Floral Refresh Paper Pack, Floral Refresh Ephemera, Spring Skies Kit, Spectrum Sherbet Strawberry Painted Grid Transfers, Spectrum Sherbet Botanical Transfers, Spectrum Gardenia Chipboard Words, Layered Page Foundations 04, Messy Stitched Circles: White 01, Spill Frame Layers 12, Adorable Moments Brushes and Stamps, and the freebie package.
My page: It’s a bit of rework to include this photo of my granddaughter. I do love this color palette, and I like how the dictionary paper contrasts with the patterned and multi-colored paper in the top portion. The dictionary paper wording goes perfectly with her happy face.

Aside from the freebie package, products used include: Fine Line Twists Brushes and Stamps 04, Brielle Add-On Paper Pack, Brielle Element Pack, Leyton Element Pack, Letterbox Garden Song Element Pack, Ripped Frame Stack Layers 01, Vintage Artistry Sky Stack Layers, and Page Fade Clipping Masks 01.
I hope you join us in this new challenge! Please remember to post your layout in the Challenge of the Month category and also in the April Challenges area in the forum for your credit to the shop.
Happy Scrapping! – Brenda
